“Only” a Barista, you must be wondering? Well, think again, this Apple Inc job is definitely not a cake walk!
Apple Inc is looking to hire a barista for the Visitor Centre of its Bay Area office in Santa Clara Valley, California. The job will entail preparing a high quality or “stellar” espresso that can make it to the high standards of the company. So, this would be nothing like working at the local cafe.
Coffee is very important to the Apple employees, where decisions like how the next iPhone is going to look like take place behind closed door meetings with “stellar” coffee. Leander Kahney, the author of Jony Ive: The Genius behind Apple’s Greatest Products, wrote that their meeting room had an Italian Grimac coffee machine which cost 3000 USD. It was replaced by an unknown machine after it started to leak but it can be expected that this one is just as high-end as the last machine.
What are the job requirements?
Though the barista Apple is hiring will most likely not be preparing coffee for the likes of Jony Ive, they still have some specific requirements:
- The candidate must know how to prepare a “stellar” coffee “while maintaining speed, quality and consistency”
- The candidate will be working at the visitor centre cafe, and while the offices themselves might be well stocked with all amenities, the job posting warns that the barista must be prepared for “environmental exposure to cold, heat and water”
- Since the candidate will be serving coffee to some of the greatest minds who created products that are basically running the digital world, they need to make sure that “groomed in appearance at all times”
- Whether the customer is a top office personnel or a fresh intern, the barista must have a know-how of latte art and an “interest in making guest’s espresso special A la latte art”
- The candidate needs to maintain “superb attendance record, positive attitude and demeanor” and should be “able to work a flexible schedule”
- The candidate needs to “work cross-functionally with the retail store, janitorial, facilities, and health & safety groups” and “be present in peak periods”
- If expectations from the barista evolve, he/she is expected to adjust accordingly and follow the directions of the manager
The precise requirements which include a Current California food handlers certificate do not seem any less demanding than what we would expect from one of the largest companies in the world, Apple Inc. So, be very careful while applying as you surely don’t want your coffee thrown back at your face by some of the brightest and most stressed out engineers in the world.
