The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) declared the revised ranks for JEE Main 2015 yesterday, July 9. IIT-Kharagpur emerged as the top choice among students as it received around 2.5 lakh applications, the maximum among the premier Indian Institutes of Technology. IIT-Bombay and IIT-Delhi have always been a favourite for the students with higher ranks, IIT- Kharagpur and IIT-Madras received the maximum applications from the close to 25,000 students who registered for admission this year.
In total, around 10,000 seats in all 18 IITs received 28 lakh applications this year. While around 164 and 161 applications were filed in IIT-Delhi and IIT-Bombay respectively, each seat at IIT-Kharagpur got an average of 186 applications. Not a single seat in the IITs was vacant after the first round. Only 112 seats are vacant in NITs in states such as Sikkim, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
The major reason why students have picked IIT-Kharagpur is apparently due to the interdisciplinary options that the institute offers. The students who have scored below the 300 rank will not get a computer science seat in any of the older IITs, but at Kharagpur, students are allowed to pick up computer-related subjects along with their core subjects.
IIT-Kharagpur also offers around 38 courses which is double than the 16 courses offered in Mumbai and 15 courses in Delhi.
