FIRST there were the rumours. Now there is a date.
Apple has reportedly marked March 15 on the calendar as the day to launch a new iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.
Several sources including 9To5Mac today have reported the date when Apple CEO Tim Cook and his posse of Apple executives will again take to a stage in San Francisco and unveil the next big thing — which in this case is Apple’s new small thing.
Nothing is ever certain with Apple until it happens but the March 15 date falls in line with the wide expectations of a mid-March event.
The headline product at the event will be the new iPhone, currently known as the iPhone 5se although that name could, and hopefully will, change before the event.
The new iPhone is expected to have the specs and smarts of the iPhone 6 but in the size of the old four-inch iPhone 5.
Apple is also expected to unveil the iPad Air 3. With the release of the 12-inch (30cm) iPad Pro late last year, Apple’s 10-inch (25.4cm) tablet skipped its normal annual update cycle and will be nearly 18 months old by next month.
A leak this week of a possible case for the iPad Air 3 suggests the new tablet could have a Smart Connector, and an optional Apple-made keyboard, like the iPad Pro — which would be a first for Apple’s main iPad range.
Apple is also expecting to update the Apple Watch.
9To5Mac predicts there will be new sports bands, new Hermes bands, a new black Milanese loop and possibly a new rugged nylon strap.
But Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster predicts Apple will unveil a new Apple Watch S model that will have a better battery and a faster chip.
