Medical students in shock: TN government might exempt state from NEET exam

The state of Tamil Nadu has been going through one crisis after another and a subject that the AIADMK government has been championing for a long time now is about the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). After widespread protest by medical students in the state to not have NEET in Tamil Nadu and after multiple visits by ministers from the state to Centre, finally Union Minister Nirmala Sitaraman’s promise to exempt Tamil Nadu might become a reality soon. This has come as a shocker to many of the medical aspirants.

“We have worked really hard to get a good score in NEET and now saying we are not taking it is like playing with my future,” said a medical aspirant who is protesting against the proposed ordinance by the Tamil Nadu government to exempt the state from NEET.

What is NEET?

The National eligibility cum entrance exam is the entrance for medical aspirants to acquire a seat in government and medical college. It is promises to ensure a single entrance format for the medical students across different syllabuses in the country.

What is the issue?

For many years now, in Tamil Nadu there have not been separate entrance exams. It is all based on their 12th marks and this is to ensure that urban and rural students are all assessed on a single window platform, and also help rural students who can’t afford expensive private coaching for entrance exams.

With the announcement by the Supreme Court to make NEET compulsory from this year many students started protests demanding the cancellation of the examination for one more year.

Fresh demands

There are many students who after the SC decision started to focus on NEET exams and have done well too. Now the Centre’s decision to support the State to pass a special ordinance for one year exemption from NEET hasn’t gone down well.

Those who have been relying on NEET have said that they want this format of selection to start. In fact while medical counselling has begun in many states, aspirants in Tamil Nadu are still waiting for a conclusion in the NEET decision itself and they are ready to go on a long legal battle too if need be.

“Lawmakers should not be law breakers,” cried the students who were protesting outside DME at Kilpauk in Chennai.
