Upcoming Mercedes GLS full-fat SUV to be noticeably lighter than current car

Mercedes, as we know, replaced the GL back in 2015, with the GLS. Since then, the latter has proved to be quite a hit among the elite buyers globally. Now, however, the GLS is expected to get a midlife update.

A test mule of the second-gen GLS was spotted recently for the first time. The car was seen in heavy camouflage with make-shift body panels, presumably to hide the actual sheet metal that will go into production. We can expect the new GLS to have larger dimensions than its predecessor. Also, as a part of the update, the new GLS shall feature a revamped cabin and better quality materials.

The car will be built on the MHA platform resulting in it being noticeably lighter than the current model. Moreover, it is expected to be powered by the same 3-litre V6 petrol and diesel engines. A more powerful AMG ‘G63’ version of the second-gen GLS will come in later.

Mercedes is likely to launch the new GLS sometime next year. Post its arrival, the GLS will rival against the likes of the Volvo XC90, BMW X5 and the Audi Q7.
